The Dream

 

Once upon a time there was a boy of 44 years, himself the son of a migrant in his old country. One day, after living 25 years in his old city, where he partied and grieved, he wanted to go to another place, a new country that he already visited frequently for 20 years, and where he made new friends and family. And this was in new cities all the way at the other side of the puddle, as he called it.

 

One day, in the old city where he already had seen everything, and still loved lot, he decided to share his love for his city with the people far away on the other side of the ocean. He wanted to show how beautiful his old city was and how the people there enjoyed life in a other, sometimes unusual, fantastic way.

 

He planned a long and beautiful journey which would take a great part of his life and on which he would make made many new friends. And he was so happy when he saw how his new and old friends and also their children on both sides of the pond or puddle, got to know each other much better and learned a lot from each other.


 

 

The fairy tale in the project

 

The whole story of :

1) Victor Zaidi (44y), actor, known figure in Antwerp, son of         migrant and now trying to do a project in the USA with love and passion for his old city

2) Shaylin Usiak (25j) (Modesto), musician, home town girl, lived in and enjoyed Antwerp, between November 2009 and April 2010, for half a year

3) Ramona Wouters actress-model (Belgian/Dutch) 10 years immigrant – in the USA and former manager of a Belgian restaurant-café in Vail, Colorado

-   An adventure to discover another world share culture and history in this new world

-   52 cities with a different background and several types of migration and its  evolution

-   a quest for the where and why of the greener grass

-   the sharing of the love of their home city and the connection of Antwerp with the USA

-   Integration < > immigration, your own traditions <> new habits

-   the involvement of your own roots in another world

-   with a heart for ANTWERP

 

 

 

 

The Data

-   2 to 5 people: musicians, actors, and crew who have close ties with Antwerp and migration

-   The beautiful city of Antwerp, "A", full of culture, art, fashion and the Bourgondic way of life

-   Opening Red Star Line museum September 2012

-   3 million old Europeans left here à much more descendants today

-   52 (or fewer cities): depending on the investment and available funds

-   Route determination according to number of cities and/or involvement

-   Many new Americans with a close tie with "A"ntwerp

-   Interest of Americans about their roots

-   A few enthusiastic people of Antwerp take their ties with them to the USA

-   I have visited the USA for 20 years and I have been a co-project manager on the Burning Man Festival for six years, in that way I have a wide network of people in the USA, who are committed with culture and art

-   310 million Americans now, of which 82% in the cities or suburbs

-   Expandable version of the audio-visual presentation (with several acts) depending on needs and budget

 


 

 

Goals

 

-   To get as many Americans interested in "A" using the Red Star Line Hype, with a grand finale at the ending event.

-   To show the American the strengths of "A" recreational and businesswise   - "A" must be the first home port in Europe

-   To present "A" on several levels and bringing the Americans here through a funnel system using quality partners in the US and in Antwerp

-   Promoting the Antwerp cultural assets

-   Showing an audio-visual presentation containing a documentary about the Red Star Line, a couple scenes of the play written and directed by Alex Van Haecke and a promotion video about the city of Antwerp and the opening of the RedStarLineMuseum


 

 

How

 

-   Visiting 52 (or fewer) cities.
Displaying during the day a small but clearly visual art project in the city centers, making publicity for the evening event and involving the public by an interactive internet group called :“A” , friend of mine

-   Promoting the Final simultaneous event September 2012

-   A couple of days attention per city

-   Motivate all RSL-descendants (main target group) and the other culture sensitive Americans and friends of the city of Antwerp

-   In cooperation with VIW (Flemish people In the World) and Dutch organizations in the USA

-   Internet registrations on the site :“A”  friend of mine" during the day

-   Using Internet newsletters and all local media

-   DVD of the show in sales/or gift

-   From basic idea to larger event according to the personal contacts (Jewish community, VIW, Dutchmen and other expats, art and culture associations, restaurants-breweries-etc.)

-   Optional: two larger events in order to keep the item hot (east & west coast)

-   A week before the opening in September 2012: 7 or 10 days extra publicity and promotion in New York for the simultaneous event

 

1) The opening of the Red Star Line museum in :“Antwerp

2) A last festive presentation preferably on Ellis Island but certainly in New York to accentuate the bond between both cities and countries

 

 

The Evening Show

 

Location: parks or a large public place with the "Bring your own chair"-principle

 

1) We hear a loud ship Horn, one spotlight turns on and...

2) The Captain welcomes some distinguished guests (here the public) and introduces ….

3) Documentary about the “Red Star Line” “open secret” episode 4 (Canvas TV).

4) The Captain introduces the music in the Ballroom.

5) Music by Shaylin Nicole "Irish Rose"a song about being homesick

6) The Captain introduces the life below decks by…

7) The projection of a couple of scenes from the play "Red Star Line" by Alex van Haecke (serious and also humorous clips)

8) We hear the fasten seatbelts sound 

9) The (now airplane) Captain introduces the arrival in Antwerp with landing information and starts ...

10) The promo film about the city’s "port" function (past and present) (“A” port of Europe), diamond, relevant trade and industry, the other museums and art in Antwerp. About the Inhabitants, Burgundy, the good life, central location in Europe and the Antwerp (Flemish) companies that we know already in the United States

11) Farewell by the Captain with a small piece of stand up about the little differences: US & A. An invitation to both the final event in NY (on Ellis-Island) as well as for a visit to the city of Antwerp

12) Farewell Song by Shaylin, Thanks, Bow, applause and the Captain introduces ....

13) A free round of Belgian beer 

14) And the souvenir shop (posters, postcards, the book ? , DVD? other gadgets)  and a info-booklet / the handing out of a sampling or gift bag with Antwerp products of the sponsors

Talking to local authorities about locations, permits and logistical support/extension networks usa/electronic check, preparation and improvement of both the star performance as the rest of the practical, artistic video-footage needed for this project

 

July – August 2011:

Vacation but probably not/Everything that still needs to be done: improve and adjust. Go to Burning Man if I get the chance
